Council Amends Ordinance to Include Asphalt Plant Restrictions

Limitations and guidelines regarding the operating hours of local asphalt and cement plants were added to Chapter 153 of the Town's Code of Ordinances.

During the May 13 meeting of the Coventry Town Council, members approved and adopted councilman Ted Jendzejec's amendments to Chapter 153 of the Coventry Code of Ordinances entitled "Licensed Businesses".  Jendzejec began considering the revisions after being approached by a number of his Dist. 5 constituents residing in Wood Estates and Westwood Estates, who for nearly a year, have been voicing their discontent in regards to excessive noise, traffic and contamination allegedly originating from several nearby asphalt plants.  The amendment added a fourth section to the chapter as follows: SECTION 1. Your Next Car: What's It Going to Be?

I'm hoping to drive my old beater into the ground before we need to get another car, but I'm on the lookout. What's your next car going to be?

My wife and I drive a perfectly good 2002 Nissan Sentra with 127,318 miles on it. "Stella" has four wheels and gets us from Point A to Point B. We've reached the stage in the life of the car where we don't repair body damage (as you can tell from the accompanying photo). I'm ashamed for my Dad to see it. But hey, it's paid for. Even though I'd love to get 200K miles out of Stella, she has some mechanical problems, like a seized bolt that has left the transmission fluid unchangeable for about eight years. She could conk out any old day. So we've been on the lookout for our next car. I'm paying attention to car commercials, asking friends about their cars. You know the feeling. We're looking for something that gets good gas mileage, and is …

Dept. of Business Regulation: Effect of CCFD Receivership on Homeowners Insurance Rates

The following memorandum was submitted by court order to Judge Brian Stern in regards to the Central Coventry Fire District Special Mastership.

April 23, 2013 Insurers use the type of fire protection covering a particular home as one factor in determining whether or not the insurer will agree to insure the home (underwriting) and determine the premium that will be charged to the homeowner (rating). The Rhode Island appointed advisory organization, Insurance Services Office (ISO), publishes Public Protection Classifications (PPC) that insurers may use to underwrite and rate homeowners insurance. Insurers are free to use other classifications, however, we believe that the use of ISO PPC classifications is common for most insurers writing in Rhode Island. Insurers will set different standards for what PPC classifications they are willing to write and the effect on rates. Therefore…

School Improvement Projects Ready for Bid Process

A bid package complete with project diagrams and photos was presented to and approved by the School Building Committee on Wednesday.

At the their latest meeting, members of the Coventry School Building Committee met with Torrado Architects Owner Luis Torrado and Vice President Brian O'Connell to discuss the progress that has been made on the planning and engineering of five school improvement projects that the company was contracted for in March. "We're doing very well and staying with our schedule," said Torrado. During the meeting, O'Connell presented to the Committee design development and schematic designs for each of the schools where work will be performed. Among them was an asbestos abatement plan correlating with state health department requirements which illustrated asbestos-ridden areas of the schools, including various roof and floor tile locations at …
