Aeration is always necessary and you shouldn't think that your waterfall does it all. Checking your pH, ammonia, nitrite and alkalinity levels is a must. pH should be 7.2-7.8, ammonia & nitrates should be zero, alkalinity should be 120 ppm. What happens when your pH, ammonia and alkalinity is low.. your pond becomes acid, fish are sick, lie at the bottom, your water will have an odor and you need to do a 25% water change immediately, and retest, 25% water change, retest, 25% water change, retest until its right.
