Western Coventry Rescue Crew Delivers Newborn En Route to Hospital

Both mother and baby are now at Kent Hospital and in good health.

At 11:40 a.m. on Friday, Western Coventry Rescue 8 was dispatched to transport a pregnant resident in labor to Kent County Hospital.

When the crew, which included Capt. Kelly Guastini, Lt. Kathleen Hartley and Captain Robert Mann, arrived at the residence, the mother's water had already broken and she was having contractions only four minutes apart.

"We started to tranport her to Kent Hospital, but only made it as far as Harkney Hill Road and Camp Westwood," said Capt. Guastini. "So we pulled over to the side of the road and delivered the baby. The parents didn't know it was a boy so we got to give them the news, too!"

After delivering the newborn at 12:02 p.m., crew members transported the new mother and her baby the rest of the way to Kent County Hospital where they are both in good health.

These are the good stories one loves to hear. We're proud of our fire personnel. Wish whatever issues are going on with the fire districts would get straightened out & let these men & women continue on with the great jobs that they do. Thank you for this story.
