Town Officials Approve Plans for Coventry Dog Park
A committee of local residents will organize and raise funds for Coventry's first dog park.
In the near future, Coventry dog owners will no longer have to travel out of town to allow their dogs to socialize with other local canines in a public setting.
Following the August 20 Town Council meeting at which residents Lisa Finneran and Kathleen Levett approached the Council during public comment about their desire to have a dog park in Coventry, town officials agreed to meet with them to discuss the possibility.
Finneran and Levett came prepared with answers to numerous questions that might be asked of them when they met with Town Manager Tom Hoover, Town Council President Gary Cote, Vice President Kerry McGee and Parks and Recreation Director Guy Lefebvre last week. After much discussion, the officials agreed to set aside a section of town land for the creation of the park with the agreement that the project will not be funded or maintained by the town.
"We decided that if they could have the wherewithal to organize and maintain it, we would find them a piece of land," said Hoover. "We're narrowing down a couple of locations now and we hope to choose a suitable one by the end of the month."
Finneran explained that she has done much research on the subject and has also received advice from the organizer of South Kingstown's dog park. She has requested an acre to an acre and a half of land from the town, which would be fenced in and maintained by members of the Coventry Dog Park Committee that is currently being formed.
Some ideas for the park to ensure safety, cleanliness and security are key-card accessibility so that only dog owners who have shown proof of pet vaccinations can enter, having a volunteer group take shifts picking up dog droppings, selling advertising to local companies which would be tastefully displayed around the park to fund maintenance and landscaping and the possible installation of a walking path around the park for dogs and their owners to use if off-leash playtime is not for them.
Aside from advertising, there will be other fund-raising opportunities put into place, including the sale of personalized walkway bricks, similar to what the Coventry Girls' Softball League is selling to fund field improvements.
"That is just the very beginning part of our planning, but we have some fantastic ideas," said Finneran. "We're one of the only Rhode Island towns left without a dog park and this will be a great thing for residents and their dogs."
Councilman Carl Mattson has offered to help Finneran start a non-profit organization and set up the dog park's website where residents can find information about the park, volunteer opportunities and how to donate, as well as contact the committee.
At a future meeting, the Town Council will present a proclamation supporting and approving the dog park plans which Finneran hopes will solidify the legitimacy of the endeavor.
In the coming weeks, Finneran will continue to form the dog park committee and is open to suggestions for park features. She can be reached at Lfinneran12@gmail.com. Please vote in the poll below about which aspect of a dog park is the most important to you and your pooch or leave a comment with any other ideas or suggestions that you may have.

In addition to having all dogs vaccinated, it's also neccessary to have all dogs licensed considering dog owners are unable to receive a licence without having updated rabies. Also a sign posted stating the Town of Coventry is not responsible for any incidents as with dog bites etc. and the owners of their pets take full responsibility.

A terrific idea and if done right will be a nice addition to the Town of Coventry amenities.

This is wonderful! My Golden loves other dogs, and this is a good way for her to interact with other animals. I hope it happens sooner than later.

We already have a dog park it is called the Oakhaven school. Why look any further. We can have Gary Cote oversee it since it is right outside his door. We may as well get something out of the property. Now what to do with the inside of the school. Maybe a soup kitchen since will be all broke if we elect the same officials again.

Dear Sick to Stomach.
I read your comment and I appreciate your feelings, but just to clarify, no amount of money will be spent by the town for this park. This will all be funded and maintained by the Coventry Dog Park Association, which as we mentioned in the article, is in the process of being formed. I can not say enough about Mr. Cote and the town council. They were engaged and excited about the project from the beginning. Kathleen and I are not politicians and we really did not know what to expect, but we are certainly happy with the outcome and we are looking forward to being able to enjoy the park with all the other dog loving residents of Coventry-Lisa Finneran.

How about that area off harkney Hill road not too far from the new Girls soft ball field? At the bottom of Harkney Hill road on the left just past the Golf course is a big field down in a hollow that was recently used for a corn field a few years ago. I think that would be a perfect spot! All it needs is to "Dress up" the old road going in to it and make some parking areas in there and you have a perfect spot out in the Country away from the hustle and noise of the town, and it is beautifull down in there too! Also, shouldn't be any coplaints from any neighbors or anyone! Thanks.

HI David,
That spot sounds beautiful. My daughter played softball and I live near there. She grew up before I could enjoy the convenience of that soft ball field. As far as the location, we were concerned with the park being convenient for the central Coventry residents along with Western Coventry. We wanted to find somewhere that everyone could easily get to. We will be making the annoucement about the location of the property probably on Wednesday morning

Hi Lisa,
Thank you for the nice comment. That spot I was writing about also used to have an old house there that was once an old "Stage coach Inn" Many years ago. Also, down in the back where the other old field is there are all kinds of old roads that are now trails, to walk your dog! They are already there plus the place has some interesting history to it besides the very old foundations that are in there way up in back. There are also a couple of ancient cemetarys that used regular rock like -stones for a head stone up in that area. I think these were probably 17th century graves or sometime around that time. Anyways, I walk my dog down in there all the time and it Is a beautiful area with remnants of a time long gone in the past! Thanks.
