RI Future: Rep. Guthrie Refuses State House Stipend
Guthrie, a Coventry resident is the only member of the General Assembly who goes without the salary.
According to RI Future, Representative Scott Guthrie (D-Dist. 28, Coventry), who has served in the House since 2008, continues to not only decline raises to the current $13,962 State House stipend but also refuses the salary all together.
Guthrie has sponsored multiple bills during the last three sessions that, if passed, would have raised taxes for Rhode Island’s richest residents. He declined to comment to RI Future's Bob Plain as to why he does not take the pay.
Along with Guthrie, 18 additional state legislators forgo the position's health insurance, including Coventry Reps. Mike Chippendale (R-Dist. 40) and Lisa Tomasso (D-Dist. 29). Click here for a full list of legislators who decline state health insurance and "waiver bonuses".

Did he do it because it would effect his disability pension? Tomasso should refuse the health care because she is covered by her spouse. More election year "good will"
This part time job should not have health care in the first place.

Tomasso does refuse the health care insurance. She does accept the waiver payment of $1,001.00 in lieu of accepting the insurance, which is a fraction of the cost of the premium that would be paid for the plan on her behalf. Know your facts before making false statements.

Oh sorry I guess I should be thanking Rep Tomasso for not double dipping on the entire health care cost and ONLY grabbing the additional $1000 bucks.
.
Your comment kind of reminds me of what my wife says to me when she gets back from the "Shoe Sale Extravaganza" at P.Place Mall.
"Look at my new shoes do you love them!! They were on sale for $40 off each pair"
Thanks for saving us $120 babe.

Your sarcasm notwithstanding, I am only suggesting that comments made in the future be based on factual information. Making such comments based merely on speculation without factual basis for such only serves to grind the rumor mill, which in turn creates needless hysteria and derision founded on misinformation. It is counter-productive to solving the many problems we face as a society.
I have no particular allegiance to, or opinion of, Rep. Tomasso, but your comment gave me pause to do a little homework to verify the validity of your statement. And your statement was just plain wrong. The issue of her acceptance of the waiver payment is another debate for another time. That being said, you are certainly entitled to voice your opinion( a right that I would ALWAYS fight tooth and nail for you to have, regardless if I agreed with you or not), however, you are not entitled to create your own facts. Stated opinions are always much more respected and received when they are intelligently based on factual, verifiable information.

So my comment is actually a question. Does Guthrie get penalized or is is disability pension reduced if he adds the State House stipend to his income? Is he still working for the window company on the side and collecting a disability pension? I guess I need to look up the rules of a NK Fire disability pension. So we are clear I am not disputing his injury. I am asking if he is refusing the pension because he has to or because he wants to keep the tax free pension in tact. That's all.

So was motive to protect self or taxpayer? As far as Tomasso she should not accept the 1000 stipend. It errs on entitlement. A part time legislature does not deserve fulltime healthcare.

Crusader you should come down from the clouds and read instead of construe

My feet are firmly planted on the ground, and I read just fine Voter, but thank you for your machiavellian advice just the same. I didn't need to "construe" anything. You clearly stated, "Tomasso should refuse the health care because she is covered by her spouse.", which I merely pointed out as a false statement. I would have thought if I had misinterpreted your wording, then you would have clarified it in your first reply, even the second reply.
Speaking of reading, I did just that, as I read back through your previous postings. It is apparent that you have some axe to grind in regards to Rep. Guthrie, as a large portion of your typing on this site has been dedicated to bashing him, and the Democratic party in general. To that end, I say, "Have at it!". That's what this forum is all about. Just keep it factual. It makes your posts more credible, rather than coming off as senseless ranting.

Voter you remind me of a guy who preaches about family and paying taxes and doing the right thing and then finds himself on tape with someone else and doesn't pay his taxes!! Just an observation!!

Well I do pay my fair share for sure, and you will not find me on tape anywhere.
I don't care much for Guthrie. It's not just his current politics. It's about ethics and character. You know he came into office the first time years ago touted as a reformer. Being an unaffiliated voter then and today I attended his fundraises and supported him. I did disagree with his "flat tax" position back then but not entirely, and then it happened. He changed his opinions and aligned himself with the unions and party leadership forsaking the majority of his electorate. He realized you don't need the majority of your district to get elected, you need the majority of motivated voters on a given day. Big difference.
There must be and urn or cask at the entrance to the State House that holds the Kool-Aid that makes elected officials put aside their beliefs, and the will of those who elected them. They become all knowing as they cross the great seal of the chambers, and think they know best for us because we are uneducated buffoons dazzled by the dog and pony show.

I am also adamantly apposed to drinking and driving. This was a big part of the culture in the state house until recently when most of the booze was removed and I say most because you can still find some GreyGoose here and there. Boozing after meetings is still the thing in Coventry too.
I am not accusing Guthrie of this to be clear I will say it again I am not accusing Guthrie of this.
I have witnessed many of the Coventry Dems get completely wasted and drive home. This isn't 2 beers and a pub sandwich as a late dinner, this is multiple shots staggering around loaded. I dont drink myself medically I cant. I don't condemn those who do but don't drive. It's accepted practice by this some in this group I dont agree with.
I have offered rides on several occasions and was refused. The most common response when offered a ride "I'm all set in Coventry" which could not be further from the truth, especially under the current command. CPD pulls no punches, they are a squared away dept. and it's only a matter of time rolling the dice that we will have DUI headlines like in years past.
