[POLL] Should Former Gov. Carcieri Apologize For 38 Studios Fiasco?

During his first interview about the video-game company since it closed, the former EG resident and two-term governor takes responsibility for the original deal but says the state should have done more to save the company.

Former Gov. Donald Carcieri stopped short of apologizing for helping orchestrate the deal that gave 38 Studios a $75 million guaranteed loan to move to Rhode Island, but he did take some responsibility Thursday in his first interview on the subject.

"I will take responsibility for approving the deal," Carcieri said in an interview Thursday with WPRI's Tim White.

The video game company owned by legendary ex-ballplayer Curt Schilling closed in May, leaving the state on the hook for $102 million in bond payments. Until now, Carcieri had remained silent on the 38 Studios deal that passed the General Assembly in 2010 on the promise of hundreds of jobs.

Carcieri did tell White he wondered if the company would have remained viable if the state had put in more money.

"More could have been done to save the company," he said. He also suggested the state consider defaulting on the loan, something Gov. Lincoln Chafee said Friday he would not do, according to the Providence Journal.

What do you think? Should Carcieri have apologized? Should the state have done more? Vote in our poll below and leave a comment.

I don't think former state Governor's apologize. Only current Presidents and only to other nations other than his own.

This guy should not only take responsibility for that fiasco, but the whole state budget deficit....That happened on his watch and he never owned that....Now he's moved on and blames the current Governor for not doing enough. He was Star Struck by a big league ball player and that dIdnt work out well at all...

Tom
The beauty and sometimes downfall of our system is that it is a system of checks and balances. Carcieri did not approve the 38 deal, granted he was all for it but, the General Assembly passed it overwhelmingly. It doesn't make it right. Who controlls the GA again?????
.
The GA also created the deficit with their spending habits and squandering windfall money like the tobacco and lead paint settlements without cutting spending at the same time.
.
Shame on you and I for electing the same corrupt politicos year after year. WE are to blame for 38 studios!!
.
There was something in it for all the politicos involved, and that should come out in the investigation we shall see.
.

Make no mistake about this, If Leader Fox didn't back that Bill it would not have happened. I blame Fox and Piva Weed more that the last Gov. without them pushing it thru it would have died in committee.
.
As far as him being Star Struck?? Carcieri has traveled the world professionally, met heads of state and dined with presidents He has even had dinner with me, and I'm a pretty big deal!!!
So I dont think he was "Star Struck" by meeting Curt Schilling

Leader Fox and Piva Weed are equally to blame as Carcieri. This deal was a dead issue unless Fox pushed it thru the House, and Piva Weed the Senate. They all voted for it So they ALL share the BLAME, yet we keep electing the same Dolts to Providence.
.
Wake up Coventry....Follow the Money............
.
Who voted for it from Coventry?????
Guthrie ?
Tomasso ?
Kettle ?
Shibley ?
Nunes ?

i blame the current governor. if he kept his mouth shut, private money would have flowed in and they would still be in business.

M Hatter I dont thinks so, Private money would have sniffed out this bad deal long before. I think we ended up with it because private money rejected it as too risky

It's a shame that there is no accountability... and that local businesses could've used that money much more effectively. Who knows what it could've meant to RI. So, yes, I think he does owe an apology... even if he voted 'no' I feel like he could've done more to put a stop to it... expose the deal publicly, show why it's bad for the state, etc. Terrible decision making across the board but when you're in charge, you're accountable.
