UPDATE - Letter: Coventry Runaway - John Kakos Has Been Found Safe
16-year-old John Kakos reportedly ran away from his Coventry home on Dec. 31 and his mother, Cheryl has shared the following letter. Anyone with information should call the Coventry Police at 401-826-1100.
Update: Jan. 3, 7:35 a.m.: John's mother, Cheryl Kakos posted the following message this morning on the Facebook page she had set up when John ran away.:
I just wanted EVERYONE to know, that John Kakos is now at a safe place we set up as of now. He is not home yet, but at least he is where I know his location, know the parents, and I can take him for further help. We will work on the rest as time goes. Thanks so much for the help! The tips and things that came in, were absolutely priceless!!!
Jan. 1: My son John Kakos ran away from home yesterday morning. He has been reported to the Coventry, RI police station as a missing person. Please, I am begging, if you have any info about his where about, please contact me or the Coventry Police Station at 401-826-1100.
He is also listed on the National Data Base For Missing Peoples.
If you want to report something without him knowing it was you, please call me and I will keep the information you have private, I just need to find him. He is my son, and I love him more than words can say....
Please feel free to share this everywhere! Most likely he is in the Coventry or Warwick areas, but he is on the run so he could be anywhere... He does not have his driver's license so he is relying on others to give him rides, hitch-hiking, or walking. His last known location was at the Coventry Walmart.

Emily, the Coventry Police are involved with this and do know he is considered a runaway. In Cheryl's initial post, she had the CPD telephone number incorrect but I have the correct number in this posting three times. 401-826-1100.

Don't hitch hike John (if you read this) not a safe thing to do anymore (never has been). Being a teen today is a tough thing. But try sticking it out with your Parents (who are imperfect, as no one is perfect) but love you. All teens go through stuff., but it's better to try and work things out, so they can help you as you are maturing. Go home and talk with them. Mom, rules without relationship results in rebellion. Spend time having fun together and get to know one another. A little "mutual" respect goes a long way! Prayers!

My son ran away when he was 15, from NC. They found him for truancy in Texas. Mom went to get him and got him home. None of us talked for 2 weeks, and then slowly he opened up. I had no idea how much stress is on teenager. All the decisions, all the worries. I guess I just opened up a little more and let him have a little more freedom, and I stopped treating him like he was 10. Today my son and I are best friends. All of our prayers for your son.

For the record, the police and the FBI were the ones who found him. Skip paying a private detective, we wasted our money. The local police got my son into the national database right away. The private detective did nothing and even asked for $1,000 additional.

John, welcome home! We as parents do the best we can... being a teenager this day and age, is so much more difficult than when I was growing up in the 1960's and 1970's. We never called our parents' friends by their first name, we called our friends on the house phone, no tv unless mom/dad said so, church on Sunday, etc.... I'll keep you and your family in my prayers that things will work themselves out with some mutual respect and good old fashioned conversation :)
