• Summer Reading Program 2011
Where/When: “One World, Many Stories” Registration at Coventry Public Library or on the library website beginning Monday, June 20th
Why Go: Readers will be challenged to read at least six library books during the program. Prizes and incentive coupons will be awarded. Craft Programs and special performances will highlight the program. Names of all completers will be sent to school principals to be further recognized at the start of the school year.
Geared Towards/Pricing: Grades 1-5 Independent Readers. Free.
• Summer Green Academy Registration
Where/When: URI Campus in Kingston from July 11-15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Why Go: The University of Rhode Island Transportation Center (URITC) is offering a free program this summer for high school students who are interested in sustainable landscape architecture. The Green Design Academy will feature examples of sustainable development projects and career options via classroom instruction, guest speakers and field trips. Topics will include: Sustainability on Foot, Sustainability on Wheels, Sustainability on Tracks, Design and Communication,Sustainable Cities, Sustainable Community and Coastal Ecology.
Geared Towards/Pricing: High school students / Free. Enrollment is limited. www.uritc.org.
• It’s Summer Time! Storytime
Where/When: Barnes & Noble on Tuesday, June 21st at 10:30 a.m.
Why Go: Welcome in the new season with a Summertime Storytime. Then join Miss Jaime for a summer craft.
Geared Towards/Pricing: Pre-school / Free!
• RI National Guard Open House Air Show
Where/When: Quonset Air National Guard Base, Saturday & Sunday, June 25th & 26th beginning at 9 a.m
Why Go: Aerial and static displays including a show by the Blue Angels!
Geared Towards/Pricing: Families / Free admission and $10 optional donation for parking where proceeds go to Hasbro Children’s Hospital
• Build & Grow Clinic: Waving Flag
Where/When: Lowe’s Stores on Saturday, June 25th at 10 a.m.
Why Go: The first 50 kids to register and be present at the store at 10am will receive a kit, aprons and goggles.
Geared Towards/Pricing: Grades 1-5. Free, but space is limited. Pre-register here.
• Coventry Parks & Recreation 2011 Summer Registration
Where/When: Community Center Main Floor ongoing until July 1st.
Why Go: Session runs from July 5th - August 5th. Your child’s most current report card is required for sign up.
Geared Towards/Pricing: Grades 1-8. $195 per child. View the flyer here!
• Volunteer Summer Reading Program Sign-Ups
Where/When: Coventry Library ongoing from Monday, June 6th.
Children in grades six & up are needed for summer reading programs. Volunteers will help with decorating, crafts, story times and more! Call the library at 401-822-0192 or visit for more information.
• Registration for Summer Storytimes
Where/When: Coventry Public Library ongoing until remaining slots are filled.
Why Go: Storytimes for preschoolers beginning the week of July 4th. Storytime schedule as follows:
Rock & Read for Birth through 12 months: Mondays at 9:30am and for 13 through 23 months on Mondays at 10:30am.
Tales for Twos for two-year-olds with a caregiver: Mondays at 11:15am.
Storytimes for three through eight-year olds: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:00am.
Pricing: Free. Call youth services at 822-9102 to register. Space is limited.
