Coventry Residents Participate in Mercy Basketball Tourney

Seven Bay View Academy students from Coventry took part in the national event.

Sixteen Bay View Academy basketball players, two coaches and many members of the basketball players’ families traveled to Baltimore, Maryland over the Christmas break to participate in the Mercy Christmas Basketball Tournament.

The tournament, held on Dec. 26-29 at Mercy High School, brought together teams from Sister of Mercy-sponsored high schools from Pennsylvania, Nebraska, California, Ohio and Maryland.

Bay View won two out of three games and enjoyed the time off the court by visiting tourist attractions and even taking in a basketball game at Loyola University, arranged by a Bay View alumna and former basketball player who presently attends the University.

According to Bay View basketball team manager, Shannon McArthur, a senior from Coventry, the team really appreciated the opportunity to meet girls from other Sisters of Mercy sponsored schools.

“We enjoyed conversing with other Mercy Schools from all over the country and comparing the differences/similarities between our schools and states," she said.

Six other Coventry residents took part in the event including seniors Courtney McArthur, juniors Raquel Pederzani and Kristine McCann, sophomores Alison Guilmette and Rylee Leonard and freshman Dakota Grenier.

This is the fourth time a Mercy Christmas Basketball Tournament has taken place.  Plans are already underway for the next one which will be held in 2015 at Mercy High School in San Francisco, CA.  Bay View has put in a request to be a future host of the event.
