UPDATE: 1 Adult, 1 Pet Injured in Wood Cove Drive Blaze
The fire that destroyed a multi-unit home on Johnson's Pond is said to have started in a clothes dryer.

3:20 p.m.: Reports indicate that homeowner Bob Houghton and his tenants are currently homeless as none of the occupants of the home had insurance. The dog that was transported to Ocean State animal hospital has been treated and released.
10:58 a.m.: According to Central Coventry Fire Captain David Gorman, the fire is believed to have started in an operational clothes dryer located in a first floor laundry room.
"We think that there may have been a clogged dryer hose that backed everything up and caught the clothes on fire," said Gorman. "From there the fire looks to have spread to the kitchen into the attic and then to the rest of the house."
5:17 a.m.: According to officials, one woman was transported to Kent Hospital with non-life threatening smoke inhalation. A dog was also removed from the residence on a stretcher and transported to Ocean State animal hospital with unknown injuries.
The other four residents of the multi-unit home, including an infant escaped safely. Both families have been displaced as investigators say the house is a total loss from smoke and fire damage.
Crews remained at the residence well into Tuesday morning extinugishing hot spots. The State Fire Marshal will be on the scene later this morning to investigate the cause of the fire.
2:29 a.m.: Coventry crews are still on scene maintaining fire-fighting efforts and have started the breakdown of some equipment. Check back with Coventry Patch Tuesday morning for updates on a possible cause of this early morning fire.
1:51 a.m.: Flames are still being reported in the garage area and first floor with hot spots on the second floor and back porch of the residence as crews continue to work.
1:50 a.m.: RI Red Cross has been contacted on behalf of two families that have been displaced, totaling four adults and one child.
1:28 a.m.: Crews are still on scene extingushing the fire externally and have begun to gain control. Several hot spots in the area of the roof continue to be reported.
1:14 a.m.: According to Rhode Island Statewide scanner feed, all responders are out of the building. CCFD Tower 3 has been stationed in front of the home for water.
12:42 a.m.: Shorty before 12:30 a.m. on Feb. 19, Central Coventry fire crews responded to 50 Wood Cove Dr. for a reported dwelling fire.
Upon arrival, CCFD Engine 4 crew reported wires down in the driveway and attempted to begin extinguishing the blaze before requesting assistance from Hopkins Hill FD at 12:37 a.m. Approximately 20 minutes later, firefighters were ordered out of the building due to deteriorating conditions.
According to scanner feeds, all occupants of the residence had escaped and were accounted for as of 12:45 a.m.

We hear those terms all the time 2-alarm, 3-alarm but in my house its normally refering to the Chilli

Not a firefighter but I've been taking scene photos for 12 years now (the thumbnail on this page is actually mine from last night) so I'll try to answer as best I can. Every department is a bit different as far as what happens when the alarm levels are raised. In general (again it varies from department to department) extra trucks, ladders, rescues, and manpower head to the scene when the chief raises the alarm level. It simply brings in more equipment and men to help extinguish the fire. Hope that helped!

Basically, a first alarm is the initial response companies which is (nationally) 3 engines, 1or 2 ladder trucks, a rescue (EMS vehicle), and a chief. It is supposed to have a staff of 17 firefighters to operate safely. For every additional alarm; 2nd, 3rd, and higher brings another 2 engines, 1 ladder, EMS vehicles, and additional chiefs to staff the command post. Most places due to staffing/ budgets augment this. All things aside the issue is not shutting down CCFD !! The closure (if it happens but it wont as we all saw and will continue to see) is a side effect of the problem at large. The problem is paying back a 2Mill+ debt that was knowingly created. It hurts everyone including CCFD FF's ! Funny how the DEBT is separate from the DEFICIT and not part of the 'numbers crunch' . You'll see when the vote passes and we have our hike to cover the operation budget alone then the secondary taxes start to roll in later on to tackle the DEBT. Thus far the DEBT has been on the back burner with all numbers given. 2+ million dollar pay back divided by aprox 20,000 central coventry tax payers on top of a operation budget hike totals out to over a 100% combined hike. Sounds about right for Rhode Island , where do I sign ?

My point was (which was completely over your head), that thank God everyone was ok and that if all the firefighters in CCFD were laid off and we had a shutdown of that department, the outcome may not have been the same. This is not the proper post to talk about all the issues with CCFD right now...

What does your statment have to do with this fire. The CCFF'S are still empolyed by the district or did I miss something.
Did they not do what they were expected to do.
Let it rest statements like that go nowhere, Keep in mind the Taxpayers will have another chance comming up and what will be will be.
Some isues have already have been cleared up in court and now The Chief will now need to work on the operation budget to make it clear and accurate thats all the Taxpayers wanted from the start .

You provided local residents with the only local and I believe the first report of this fire including updates throughout the night. Thanks.
Also, despite the rhetoric about CCFD, what it most important is the fact that no one was seriously injured and a job well done!
Finally, this should serve as an unfortunate but important reminder to everyone that dryer fires account for the highest percentage of residential fires, but so easy to prevent; clean the lint trap after each use and replace the exhaust vent annually, a small investment with a huge preventive payoff in my opinion.

Did anyone see the flying saucer fly across Johnson's Pond last night? it was breath taking.....I did not see anyone get abducted though, or as far as i Know....but there will be other theories, I am sure of it...This is Crazy-town after all.
