CHS Literacy Teacher Awarded Crystal Apple

Horace Mann presented the award to Becky Haynes for excellence in education.

Coventry High School faculty members recently gathered in the school's Media Center for a staff meeting. What one unsuspecting teacher didn't know is that she wasn't just there for Professional Development, but also to be recognized by colleagues for her terrific work.

While surrounded by fellow educators, English teacher Rebecca Haynes was greeted with an enthusiastic round of applause when her name was announced as the Crystal Apple recipient. The award, presented by Horace Mann Insurance Company, recognizes educators across Rhode Island who are strategic, professional, collaborative, supportive and reflective. Haynes was chosen by a committee of her colleagues who made the final decision based on staff nominations that she had received.

Before Haynes' name was announced, a PowerPoint presentation was shown which included anonymous quotes from colleagues about her performance as an educator:

"When a student is struggling, I know I can call on her to help solve the problem.”

“I am proud to be her colleague. She represents everything good about our profession.”

Also included in the presentation were several comments from Haynes' students - likely her most important critics when regarding her ability to teach them crucial skills and lessons:

“She is always willing to work with us before, during and after school. She even works with us during her lunch period and free periods.”

“She pushes us to do better and worries about us.”

“She really cares about us and that’s why we all love you, Mrs. ____"

Apart from her role as a sophomore Literacy teacher, Haynes is also the literacy coach for the high school's Regional Career & Technical Center.
