CERT Members Review and Wrap Up Basic Training
The team received their CPR certification cards that were earned several weeks ago.
At the ninth and final Coventry CERT Basic Training class on Wednesday night, Central Coventry Fire Captain Bill Hall went over the numerous types of victim extrication and removal methods that members may need to utilize in an emergency situation.
Some (but certainly not all) of the methods include:
- Lift and Carry/Cradle
- Pack Strap Carry
- Chair Carry
- Log Rolling
- Blanket Drag
- Seat Lift and Carry
The team was taught how to decide which method to use based on certain factors such as stability of environment, number of rescuers available, strength and ability of rescuers and condition of the victim.
During a number of hands-on demonstrations, Hall stressed the importance of protecting the victim's head and extremities when performing any of the methods.
At the conclusion of the unit, an exam was given, touching upon important points from each of the units that were studied.
After the team's graduation on August 17, they will begin to meet monthly to learn new techniques, practice and review lessons from the basic training and strategize about how they will be prepared for emergency scenarios.

I personally commend the members of our community to graciously gave their time to volunteer and participate in the CERT program. Having been involved and led numerous events of a similar nature I can attest the the benefits of having ordinary folks who now have specialized training which would undoubtedly be an asset to our community if and when the need arises. Everyone who took the time to attend should be proud of their accomplishments. Congratulations!!!

Capt. Hall; A job welll done, although I hope the occasion never arises which would necessitate deployment because obviously that would only happen in the event of a catastrophy.
