Central Coventry Firefighters Raise Funds By Climbing Stairs
16 Coventry Firefighters raised over $2,000 for lung cancer research at the annual "Fight For Air" Stair Climb Challenge in Providence.
Firefighters from 27 districts throughout Southern New England came to downtown Providence for the Peak the Plaza - Fight For Air Stair Climb Challenge at One Financial Plaza on Saturday.
Central Coventry Fire District had the largest team of firefighters at the event with 16 registered members. Of the 16 men, 15 competed in the 29-floor stairway race to the top in full turnout gear complete with breathing apparatus. The gear added around 50 pounds of additional weight but the firefighters still managed to earn themselves a second place finish within Rhode Island fire districts and a fourth place finish overall.
"We're pretty psyched that we came in the spot we did," said Lt. Jim Almagno. "For us to finish ahead of some other big jobs is a pretty big deal."
Through individual fundraising for the event and a breakfast held at Flare Restaurant in Coventry, the CCFD raised $2,360 of a total $123,000 for the American Lung Association.
This was the CCFD's second year participating in the event and Lt. Almagno is certain they will participate in years to come.
"We're going to do it every year," said Almagno. "It's important for us to try to participate and stay active in our community."
